Sungnyemun & Seoul station

Sungnyemun (숭례문) is 10 min walking distance from the Seoul central station. It used to be called South Gate (남대문) and one of the four main gates surrounding Hanyang (한양, the capital during the Joseon dynasty) [1]. I went a middle school about 10 bus stops away and had passed by South Gate whenever I visited the central Seoul with friends. It was severely damaged and collapsed due to a fire by an arsonist in 2008.

The old Seoul station was constructed in 1925 during the Japanese occupation [2, 3]. An old news paper article described the building as Renaissance style with Byzantine dome [2], I would say art deco style popular in the early 1900s. It was one of the noticeable European style buildings in 70s. I have sentimental attachment because it represented a free travel. The new station was finished in 2004 and it seems similar to any other central stations in US and Europe.
